There is a third model which could really benefit for the legal tech and they are the legal aid firms with fixed fees who have to minimise their costs just to survive. Those producing and selling the legal tech however gear their products and sales towards the billable hours firms where they believe the money is. Cars may have replaced horses and wagons but they cost a packet when first introduced. However just as people realised once upon a time that a horse pulling a wagon was inefficient and not value for money clients will question the billable hours model and charges and query why more mundane tasks cannot be done by legal tech. Legal tech should be able to make inefficient legal tasks more efficient. If it did lawyers and Clients would benefit and the prices for the legal tech would come down.

When the tech gets professional indemnity insurance, let us know. That’s what they’re paying for: expertise combined with the ability to sue us when it goes wrong. That’s why complicated matters don’t get dealt with in house.

Ex Legal Rec – your perspective is warped. Think from the perspective of the client, not the lawyer. Its not the lawyers who will use tech to make their jobs easier. Its clients that will use tech to replace their lawyers.

Lawyers are unimaginative and risk-averse with an instinctive preference for the familiar and therefore safe. Why else would they be lawyers?

You can’t look at it from the perspective of which of your trainee and associate jobs will be replaced by a robot or ai.

It’s power is in the ability to circumvent the doing of certain legal tasks completely. We didn’t evolve to using robot horses to pull out wagons. we built cars.

Therefore, it’s very doubtful.
